Why use chiropractic treatment during pregnancy?

With so many postural and biomechanical changes during pregnancy, it's no wonder that pregnant women can be very uncomfortable, and potentially in a tremendous amount of pain while pregnant.  A specific chiropractic technique, the Webster Technique, is designed to address the muscular and pelvic dysfunction that seems to be at the root of this pain.  The aim of this technique is reduce the effects of sacro-illiac (SI) joint dysfunction.  In doing so, neuro biomechanical function of the pelvis is improved.

Research on the Webster technique can be found here.

Webster practitioners are chiropractors that have the additional education and passed an exam given by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.  Not all chiropractors are Webster certified.  Dr.Cardinali is a certified in Webster and has helped many women through their pregnancy.

1st Trimester — Weeks 1—13:
This trimester is characterized by morning sickness, breast tenderness, and emotional mood swings.

How Can Chiropractic Help? - During the first trimester, Chiropractors aim to correct the existing structural issues and imbalances so that they do not become more complicated as the pregnancy progresses.  In addition, morning sickness can promote a flexed upper body posture.  This can cause mid back pain, neck pain, and headaches.  Chiropractic can help with these symptoms.

2nd Trimester — Weeks 14— 26:
During this trimester, it is not uncommon to experience a shift in your center of gravity as your uterus enlarges and you gain weight. As this occurs, you may start to experience low back pain and sciatica, as well as mid-back pain due to breast enlargement.   Headaches are also common due to postural change.

How Can Chiropractic Help? - As you experience weight gain and your shape changes, chiropractic care can help balance the rounded shoulder posture that many women adopt during this time period.  In addition, gentle adjustments to the low back and pelvis can relieve the pain caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve.

3rd Trimester — Weeks 27—40:  During the third trimester, both you and your baby will experience the majority of your weight gain. Your center of gravity will continue to shift forward, exaggerating the natural curves of your spine.  This causes an increase in the stress placed on the low back, mid back, and even the neck.  Your gait patterns may also be altered, causing pelvic imbalances, pubic symphysis pain and potentially intrauterine constraint.

How Can Chiropractic Help? - This is the most important time to receive care.  Your chiropractor will help you manage these discomforts by adjusting the joints of the spine and rebalancing the pelvis and attached ligaments  Research suggests that pregnant women who are under chiropractic care will carry more comfortably though their 3rd trimester and may have a shorter labor time.

Postpartum — The hormone relaxin loosens your joints and allows your pelvis to expand during labor.  After the birth of your child, this hormone returns back to normal levels.  During this time frame, when the abdominal muscles are slowly recovering, some women experience back pain as they start to return to their daily activities.

How Can Chiropractic Help? - Chiropractic care during the postpartum period may decrease any low back pain and may help ensure that the pelvic joints have proper biomechanics as your ligaments shorten and tighten back to their original lengths
